DIY Bow Tie Headband Supplies Checklist (please note: some links below may be affiliate links)
- Bow Tie Headband Pattern
- Jersey/Knit Fabric
- Sewing Pins
- Bodkin
- Rotary Cutter
- Pattern Weights
- Paper Scissors
Sewing Instructions
Step 1: Cut out your pattern according to the marked notations (Cut 2 on fold – Band, Cut 1 – Casing, Cut 1 – Knot) Next, Place one Band to the other with right sides facing, pin along both curved outer edges. Fold the Casing along the fold line with right sides facing, pin along the long edge. Fold the Knot with right sides facing matching the notches.
Step 2: Sew along each pinned edge with 1/4″ seam allowance (removing your pins as you go).
Step 3: Place your Bodkin into the Band with the bottom edge in first, open the Bodkin and clip the one side of the fabric edge. Maneuver the bodkin out through the opposite side.
Steps 4: Repeat Step 3 for the Casing and Knot. Press to neaten.
Step 5: Fold the knot onto itself with right sides facing along the raw edges. Pin in place.
Step 6: Cut a pieces of 1 1/4″ elastic that is 3″ wide. Clip one end of the elastic into the Bodkin and insert the elastic through the Casing. Pin the elastic to the fabric on either end to secure.
Step 7: Sew the elastic in place along each end, leaving 1/2″ of elastic past the raw edge of the fabric.
Step 8: Sew the Knot along the pinned edge with 1/2″ seam allowance. Trim and turn the Knot to the right side.
Step 9. Press the raw open edges of the Band to the wrong side and press to neaten. Next, slip the Knot over the center of the Band.
Step 10: Insert one end of the casing into one open edge of the Band, pin in place.
Step 11: Repeat step 10 to the opposite sides of the Casing and Band.
Step 12: Topstitch the casing in place along the pined edges of the band. You’re all finished! Enjoy your DIY Tie Knot Headband! – XO Rosy
